FROM PINSTRIPE PRESS

Bronx Cheer by Chetan Dave
EDITOR'S BOOK REVIEW

"I HAVE TO ADMIT, I've never been a big fiction reader. However, that may change now that I have read "Bronx Cheer" by Chetan Dave. The book is set in the fall of 2003. After years of unsuccessful attempts at obtaining big game tickets, three ordinary fans embarked on a last minute do or die mission to seize the passes to see the main event in person. Battling shrewd ticket brokers, crooked government officials, and so called “friends”, the question remained whether they would be able to get their hands on the tickets before time ran out.

What really impressed me about this book, is Chetan's true-to-life depiction of real and relatable baseball fans. The game is actually secondary to the character's tenacious struggle to make it there and the adventures they experience are totally believable. These hurdles that they face make this one a real page-turner and I found myself literally "Cheering" these poor guys on. Inevitably, I asked myself "What would I do?" and that's what makes Bronx Cheer such a good read. We would all love a chance to be in these character's shoes and Chetan Dave knows that."

"The plot moves at a brisk pace and there is little time wasted in getting the story off the ground. In fact, right from the opening page, it's as though the reader is brought into the story while it's still moving. The second novel from this talented writer begins in a mundane office with the narrator contemplating the situation. The plot twists are surprising which leaves the reader off balance as to what will happen next and how the character will maneuver out of certain spots. The main characters are ordinary people working ordinary office jobs who, one day before the big game, discover that they have a chance at the elusive tickets through a contact of a co-worker. What ensues is a frantic chase to find the contact and track down those tickets. But they are forced to dance past crooked ticket brokers, shady government officials, and even some of their own friends whose intentions are not so friendly. Davé is also able to sprinkle in a touch of romance just enough to fit perfectly into the otherwise suspenseful, hectic pace of the story. It is a page turner for sure. The reader never quite knows what will happen next."

"Very entertaining book. I liked how the author really kept the focus on the fans and what they were going through along with setting the stage for a big event such as this. I think the characters really drive the story which makes it stronger. Not just the main characters but also the eccentric supporting characters really make it a unique plot that appeals to a wide variety of readers. It is written in such a way, that the readers is left to ponder what they would do in all of the suspenseful and bizarre situations the characters face. Very tight plot and the ending was original. I liked Dave's previous book Datoga Island and I love what he's done with Bronx Cheer."

"Very well written book that keeps the pace fast and lets the reader run alongside the characters as they scramble to get those tickets. What I liked best about the book was the fast moving plot with a lot of unexpected twists and turns making it an enjoyable guessing game. The baseball backdrop is described well but the characters and their struggles are the real story here. Thumbs up!"

EXCERPT

We could never really afford the hiked up ticket prices you always see when the games shift from regular season to playoffs. We’ve stuck with them through the dismal period of the mid eighties to early nineties where they had no shot at winning anything. With such a storied past, I viewed them as a stock which you knew would have to rebound and go back up sooner or later. So when they started picking up steam and winning championships in the late nineties, we felt our time had come. The fruits of long, laborious afternoons in front of the television watching our team go down in flames were finally ripening. We had paid our dues through many losing seasons and now our team was finally back on top. A historic era of success was taking place before us, one we could possibly tell our grandkids about when they found out about it. But we never had the wherewithal to make it to those games. Something else, mostly the price of tickets, always came up which prevented us from enjoying the experience in person. And now, we’re out of college, making money and we can’t let this opportunity go by. We can’t waste this chance. We just can’t. And we won’t. Not when we’re only two degrees of separation away from the guy holding the actual tickets. In our checkered past, we have never been this close before. And it’s not like we didn’t try to obtain them through other means. The phone, internet, ticket brokers, we’ve gone down the laundry list every fan has at their disposal as a source for tickets. About, oh I don’t know, a week or so ago, (and even another one today) they had a general sale where you could call an 800 number or log on to their web site and try to buy the tickets, a maximum of four per buyer. That sounds simple enough to accomplish, right? Well, we called and redialed the number for an hour straight and got nothing but a busy signal. I mean there’s a limited amount of time I can spend trying to pull this stuff during work hours. And the web site was no better. My finger actually started to hurt after all those mouse clicks. If the refresh button had been an actual button, it would have fallen off with the amount of times we hit it. We had basically run into a wall trying to come up with these tickets. No conventional avenues were working for us. And scalping? Don’t think so. We’re not real estate magnates just yet. Yeah, we want to go to the game, but I don’t want to sink into debt because of it.
